Indian Bridal Trends 2022

Bridal trends change year after year and who better to draw inspiration from than Bollywood celebrities. In India, the huge craze for Bollywood is well known, but when it comes to a Bollywood wedding, the frenzy knows no bound. In fact, when there is a rumored wedding coming up, the public would go to any extent to find out even the minutest detail.

Bollywood celebrities are a huge fashion inspiration in India, be it movie promotions, parties or their own big lavish weddings. The fashion designers and stylists are always busy curating their looks for every event and work even harder on their dream wedding trousseau.

With a lot of celebrity weddings that happened this year, we have created a look book of all the new trends that we have witnessed so far and will be seeing for the rest of 2022.

Minimal is the new elegance

Gone are the days of extravagant weddings with lavish decors in large venues with thousands of invitees. Micro weddings or Minimonies, which started during the pandemic, are becoming increasingly popular thus putting an end to ‘big weddings’. People are welcoming and adopting the new trend for various reasons. It is not only cost friendly but also allows couples to host an intimate ceremony with less stress and spend more quality time with their loved ones.

Getting married at the comfort of home: Alia & Ranbir

With Bollywood, privacy seems to be the main factor why celebs are opting to have mini weddings in spite of them being so popular. With the pandemic burning down, and mini weddings still on the rise it seems clear that they are a trend that will stay. From minimal decor, home weddings, trimmed guest lists to minimal outfits, Bollywood weddings are going minimal in more ways than one.

Recently, Alia Bhatt chose to get married to Ranbir Kapoor in their apartment in the presence of close friends and family. She shared pictures on her Instagram and captioned it “Today, surrounded by our family and friends, at home … in our favourite spot – the balcony we’ve spent the last 5 years of our relationship – we got married”. She broke the internet with her no makeup look and received so much praise for going bare faced on her wedding day. Although it was rumored that the wedding will be followed by a grand reception, Alia and Ranbir kept it low key and had a small party for their Bollywood friends.

Shorter guest list = more privacy: Katrina & Vicky

Katrina Kaif got married to the love of her life and actor Vicky Kaushal in a lavish ceremony on the 9th of December, 2021. Although they got married in the lavish Six Senses Fort Barwara in Rajasthan, the couple had only a handful of guests at the fort attending the wedding. The five day wedding festivities that happened had only their family and a few close friends in attendance giving them the privacy they needed.

Repurposing vintage outfits: Yami & Aditya

Yami Gautam decided to get married to filmmaker Aditya Dhar and opted for a simple wedding amid the hills of Himachal Pradesh. The wedding was quite intimate with only immediate family in attendance. For the wedding, the actress wore her mother’s saree and a dupatta given by her grandmother among other things. Her hair and makeup was done by herself with help from her sister Surilee Gautam. Yami also added that by keeping a simple and close wedding, they minimized food wastage, flower decorations and many other things.

Dia’s intimate wedding in her garden

Actor Dia Mirza married beau Vaibhav Rekhi in an intimate ceremony on February 15, 2021. The ceremony happened in her garden that was beautifully set up with sustainable and natural decor. Another interesting fact about this wedding is that it was conducted by a woman priest which is considered to be quite unusual but a welcoming change in the society.

Varun Dhawan & Natasha Dalal, Rajkummar Rao & Patralekhaa Paul, Kajal Aggarwal & Gautam Kitchlu and Vikrant Massey & Sheetal Thakur are among the other Bollywood couples who got married in intimate ceremonies thus proving that there is beauty in minimalism and simplicity.

Bridal veils with open hair

For most Indian brides, the hair tends to be restricted to a traditional bun or variations around it and always kept concealed under a veil. Over the years, the narrative has changed with brides experimenting and welcoming newer hair trends for their wedding. From hair with floral details to wavy natural curls, bridal hairstyles have come a long way. It is refreshing to see new age brides ditch the traditional hair in a bun style for luscious open hair. We saw a lot of Bollywood stars this year sporting the open hair look with gorgeous veils for their weddings.

Katrina Kaif

During one of her pre wedding festivities, Katrina Kaif looked absolutely stunning in this vintage inspired couture Sabyasachi sari with a trailing veil. Silhouetted like a white wedding gown, the pastel tulle sari was embellished with hand-cut English flowers paying tribute to her mother’s British heritage. Her hair looked effortlessly beautiful in natural waves.

Shibani Dandekar

Shibani Dandekar opted for a JADE by Monica Karishma custom designed lace bustier top and skirt set in red for her wedding to Farhan Akhtar. To top it off, she wore a delicate veil with a cathedral length train that flowed effortlessly behind her as she walked. She had soft natural curls for her hair in face framing length.

Rhea Kapoor

Another famous veil moment was that from the ace stylist Rhea Kapoor’s wedding. Mostly popular for stylist her sister Sonam Kapoor, she stunned everyone with her wedding look. The unique vintage pearl veil was the highlight of her look and she looked every bit ethereal in an ivory Chanderi sari from Anamika Khanna. She let her long shiny hair down under that gorgeous one-of-a-kind veil.

Meghna Goyal

Although not from Bollywood, Meghna Goyal, Alia Bhatt’s BFF and founder of summer somewhere got married to long-time beau Karan Soman in December 2021. Her wedding look had such a casual effortless vibe to it. Instead of a lehenga, she wore a red Arpita Mehta sari with a statement neckpiece and a matching veil. She let her hair down in big curls that looked effortlessly flowy under the veil and made her look every bit gorgeous.

Unconventional Colors

The color red is as auspicious to a Hindu Bride as white is to a Christian one. Hindu brides are asked to wear red during the wedding proceedings as it stands for prosperity and fertility. There were times when it was frowned upon for a bride to wear anything other than red. But, thanks to the evolution in Indian fashion and brides wanting to do what they want and families following along and embracing new trends, they now have a variety of colors to choose from!

Ankita Lokhande

Ankita Lokhande, an Indian TV star looked like a golden goddess in this Manish Malhotra lehenga on her wedding day. She tied the knot with her long time boyfriend Vicky Jain, on December 2021. The magnificent golden lehenga and blouse were adorned with crystals and she matched it perfectly with polki jewelry.

Anushka Ranjan

Another celeb to break the norm of red lehengas is Anushka Ranjan who got married to Aditya Seal in November 2021. Their wedding was a star-studded affair with many B-town celebs in attendance. The bride Anushka Ranjan wore a lavender Manish Malhotra lehenga for her wedding ceremony and garnered appreciation for the unusual color choice. Complementing the bride was the groom in a beige Manish Malhotra sherwani. With Veri Peri being the Pantone color of the year 2022 and with brides always trying something new, we think this color is here to stay.

Karishma Tanna

Following the trend of pastels, TV actor Karishma Tanna recently tied the knot with her long-term partner Varun Bangera in an intimate ceremony in Mumbai. Ditching the usual reds, Karishma Tanna wore a powder pink Falguni and Shane Peacock lehenga for her wedding adorned with crystals all over. This monochromatic look featured a full-sleeved blouse with an embroidery skirt and a sheer dupatta. The jewelry in pastel hues from Tyaani Fine Jewellery perfectly matched with her outfit. The pastel loving bride opted for a natural look keeping her makeup fresh and minimal. She had her hair up in a sleek bun secured with fresh baby pink roses. Seriously, if minimal isn’t the new elegance, we don’t know what is!

Alia Bhatt was serious bride goals this year

Alia Bhatt deserves a special mention in this post for being serious bride goals this year and for inspiring us to write this blog post!

Bollywood love bugs Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor got married on April 14th 2022 in the presence of family and close friends at their residence, Vastu in Mumbai’s Pali Hills. Read all about it here.

She broke the internet with her wedding look by setting a new standard for ‘minimalistic brides’. From her outfit’s unconventional color to her open hair and her no makeup look, there is no denying that Alia’s bridal look was definitely a big hit and the talk of the town.

Bhatt did full justice to the term— no-makeup makeup by opting for a sheer base, a hint of bottom eye liner and a little flush of color on lips and cheeks. She not only took a bold step with her makeup choices but also flaunted her freckles under the sheer makeup base staying true to her commitment to minimalism and setting new beauty standards for years to come.

Bhatt ditched the traditional slicked-back bun and let her hair in loose flowing tresses under the gorgeous ivory organza veil. While keeping the makeup and hair as minimal as it can be, she did not compromise on the jewelry and added statement necklace and mathapatti featuring uncut diamonds and hand-strung pearls to her look.

Let us take a moment to appreciate her bridal mehendi. In accordance to the whole minimal theme, the actor opted for an elegant understated design— a statement mandala on the center of palms and intricate designs on her fingers— a mehendi look that is sure to inspire future brides. Not to forget how she nailed the perfect wedding nails (wink), Alia went for a classic French ombre manicure featuring a pink base and white acrylics.

Weddings are all about staying true to how we are as individuals and as couples. Irrespective of the ever changing trends, every bride and groom should have their wedding in accordance to their beliefs and not follow traditions without aligning with them. The key takeaway for the brides-to-be is to take note of all the bridal trends, eliminate the ones you don’t wish to try and pick things that feel true to you and only you.
